About Website Design & Development

Most small business websites fail for the same handful of reasons. They're slow, they're built on a template that fights back the moment you need something specific, and they give search engines almost nothing to work with. Sites built here are custom: the design follows the business and the build follows the design, rather than both being bent around a theme.

The stack is chosen per project rather than by habit. A brochure site for a local trade has very different needs from a multi-site gym group running memberships, class timetables, live race timing and a merch shop. Builds range from fast static sites through to React and TypeScript applications backed by a database, edge functions, Stripe payments and a staff admin panel. Either way you get mobile-first responsive layouts, Core Web Vitals performance work and a way to edit your own content.

Search visibility is built in rather than bolted on: semantic HTML, a clean heading structure, page-level metadata, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps and schema.org structured data. Do you build on WordPress or custom code?

Whichever fits. Content-heavy sites that a non-technical team updates daily can suit a CMS. Anything with real functionality behind it, such as memberships, dashboards, live data or complex booking, is usually better as a custom React and TypeScript build with a proper database. The recommendation comes with reasons attached.

Is SEO included, or is it extra?

The technical and on-page foundation is included: semantic markup, metadata, headings, structured data, sitemaps, internal linking and performance. Ongoing content and link work is a separate engagement, covered under content and blog, and digital marketing and PPC.

Will my site work properly for ChatGPT and AI search?

That's something I build for specifically. AI crawlers often don't execute JavaScript, so pages are prerendered to static HTML with a Markdown equivalent, structured data describes the business and its services explicitly, and an llms.txt file gives assistants a clean summary of the site. AI assistants can then read and cite your pages rather than guessing.

Can I update the content myself afterwards?

Yes. Every build ships with either a content management system or a custom admin panel, plus a walkthrough, so you're not dependent on me for routine copy and image changes.

Do you handle hosting, domains and ongoing maintenance?

Domain and hosting setup is part of launch, and ongoing maintenance can be included if you want it. Some clients prefer to own and run everything themselves after handover, which is fine. The build is handed over in a state where that's realistic.

How long does a website take?

It depends on scope. A focused brochure site is a very different timeline from a platform with memberships and payments. Timelines are agreed alongside the quote, so you know what you're committing to before work starts.
